Super typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) has now weakened according to weather state bureau PAGASA. In the 11 p.m. weather bulletin, Carina was located 335 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes. It has a maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 215 kph.

Carina is now expected to less likely bring heavy rainfall in any parts of the country, however, it can still enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat. The severe flooding brough back memories of Ondoy and the topic about Ondoy was revived on X (formerly Twitter).

Many heartbreaking videos and posts calling for rescue emerged online but one of those that captured lots of attention was the man who was stranded in a barge. He was in a barge floating in a flooded river and this situation is both dangerous to him and those who would dare to save him. The flood water is too strong and deep.

Hours after, a crucial rescue operation was administered which was monitored by Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and the other officials of Pasig. Based on a report, he’s been there at the barge since 4 PM.

Rescuers attempt to save him via throwback, however, the attempts were of no use. The mud-colored river still has strong currents making the operation extra difficult for the rescuers.

Some netizens suggested an airlift rescue.

At 12:43 AM, the man has been finally rescued.

While many were reminded of today’s disaster of the one that happened in 2009, PAGASA insisted that it’s still early to make the comparison. This will only be confirmed once Carina completely leaves the country. The data will provide the confirmation.
