Student Passenger Presents QR Code to Jeepney Driver for Payment
A student passenger handed his mobile phone to a jeepney driver, saying, ‘Kuya paki-scan po yung QR para makabayad po ako’.
Flip Martinez, a Twitter user, shared a photo of a student passenger who handed his phone to the jeepney driver and presented the QR code for payment. The post generates reactions from the internet community.
Martinez is riding a jeepney along UP Ikot when he is handed a cellphone. He was surprised and confused by his fellow passenger’s gesture. The student told the driver to scan the QR code for payment.
Flip couldn’t help but wonder about the possibilities this simple act represented for the future of public transportation.
The uploader pointed out that this was not the first time he had encountered QR code payments for fares. He recalled a similar encounter back in 2019, when he was short on cash for his fare and noticed that the driver accepts QR code payments.
However, there was a noticeable difference between then and now. In 2019, he had to request the driver to provide the QR code. Today, QR codes are displayed for passengers to scan, making the process even more accessible.
“Hindi naman. Nung 2019, nung magbabayad sana ako tapos kulang ako ng pamasahe, buti na lang nakita kong tumatanggap si Kuya ng QR. Ang difference lang noon at ngayon, nirequest ko pa sa driver yung QR, ngayon nakapaskil na,” Martinez said.
This shift toward digital payments via QR codes in jeepney transportation is a great development with implications for both commuters and the transportation industry.
