Therapy Cat Ampere: Providing Comfort to Depressed Engineering Students in a Philippine University
A fur baby in Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas is serving as a “therapy cat” for depressed engineering students and those experiencing stress in their studies.
According to Hillary Joy Torrecampo from The Philippine Artisan Visayas, the cat is named Ampere, and it has become a regular presence in classrooms, providing comfort and entertainment to the students.
The therapeutic cat was given the name “Nonsense” by the initiators, but its unlabored actions have given sense to every struggle that students have faced, according to Torrecampo. Ampere often visits classrooms during class hours to provide entertainment and comfort to the students.
Edric Kristian Gantes, a third-year student of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering (BSECE), even made an identification card for Ampere.
The idea for the ID came from Gantes’ classmate, Ravi, who saw a Facebook post about a cat with an ID. Gantes then thought of Ampere and shared the idea in their class group chat. He edited some templates, laminated the ID, and made sure that the cat was comfortable wearing it.
“All of us in the group were thrilled and automatically thought of the cat that goes to our classroom from time to time, I was so interested in the idea that I tried editing some templates and laminated the ID,” Gantes said.
Despite their busy schedules and demanding coursework, the presence of Ampere and its affectionate behavior helps alleviate the students’ sadness and stress. “In purring noises, we found contentment and warmth,” Torrecampo said.
