LTO Will Issue Driver’s Licenses on Paper over Shortage of Plastic Cards
The Land Transportation Officer (LTO) will issue driver’s licenses printed on paper as they experience a shortage of plastic cards.
According to LTO chairman Jose Arturo Tugade, their supply of plastic cards will be reduced, therefore driver’s licenses will be printed on paper for the time being. Tugade stated that just 147,000 plastic cards are accessible at their branches nationwide, and that they may be depleted by the end of April.
“The solution is to use a temporary driver’s license document. We will be using paper for the temporary driver’s license. We will be printing the official receipt of the driver’s license. And on the official receipt of the driver’s license, there will be a unique QR code,” said Tugade.
At the same time, it insured that the syndicates behind the sale of forged driver’s licenses would be caught fast. Based on the article, Tugade stated that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other government agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the fake driver’s license scheme.
He claims that syndicates are powerful because they conduct business on social media. Meanwhile, the LTO said that it will no longer need driver’s license holders to undergo periodic medical checkups.
Tugade stated that he ordered the removal of the requirement in order to “ease the burden” of motorists needing to undergo periodic medical clearances in order to keep their licenses. Tugade referenced studies that showed that failing to undergo medical checks was not a known cause of car accidents.
With this revelation, drivers will only be obliged to undergo a necessary medical checkup when applying for a new driver’s license or renewing their existing licenses. Prior to the requirement’s repeal, 5-year license holders were needed to obtain medical clearances during the third birthdate following license issuance.
