Security Guard Loses Service Firearm to Thief While He Was Asleep
A security guard lost his service firearm to a thief while he was reportedly asleep along Abad Santos Avenue in Tondo, Manila.
On early Wednesday morning (August 6, 2026), a man can be seen entering the area by slipping under a rope barrier before making his way up a staircase around 5:00 am. The suspect was caught by nearby CCTV cameras
In another camera angle, the suspect was seen approaching the guard, who was resting in a corner. The man appeared to carefully watch his surroundings while moving closer to the victim.
After making sure no one was paying attention, he reportedly reached for the guard’s service firearm and successfully took it.
The suspect immediately ran away after grabbing the weapon. The sudden movement woke the security guard, who quickly realized what had happened and chased after the thief.
“Nung pagkakuha sa kanya, naalimpungatan siya and then hinabol niya ngayon ‘yung suspect,” Abad Santos Police Station Station Commander PLt. Col. Luke Palma Ventura.
According to police, a brief pursuit followed. However, the guard eventually stopped chasing the suspect after the man jumped onto the center island of the road. Authorities said the guard feared that the stolen firearm might be used against him if he continued the chase.
Investigators learned that the guard had been working a night shift. Police also found out that after finishing work in the morning, he still had family responsibilities, including taking care of his child. Authorities believe fatigue may have contributed to the incident.
Police authorities reminded security personnel to ensure they are physically fit and alert while on duty. They also stressed the importance of properly securing service firearms in their holsters at all times to prevent similar incidents.
Police have already identified a person of interest through CCTV footage and are continuing their investigation. Efforts are now focused on locating the suspect and recovering the missing firearm as soon as possible.
