Elderly Grandfather Expresses Frustration After Losing Home to Fire While Claiming Rice Assistance

An elderly grandfather expressed his frustration after his home was destroyed by fire while he was away collecting government rice assistance. 

The 65-year-old widower identified as Vergilio Saldivia Zonio, a resident of Barangay Alfonso Dose, Libacao, Aklan had left his house to claim a 10-kilogram sack of rice intended to help support his family. 

Before leaving, he entrusted the care of his two grandchildren, a 9-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, to remain at home while he went to town.

According to reports, the children were watching television when they suddenly heard a loud popping sound. After a few moments, a fire broke out inside the house. Initial information suggested that an overheated television may have started the blaze. 

Fortunately, the two children were able to leave the house safely before the flames spread. No injuries were reported, and both grandchildren escaped unharmed. 

However, the family’s small home was completely consumed by the fire.Ā By theĀ timeĀ the incident was over, nothing could be saved from the burning structure. Household belongings, furniture, clothing, and other personal possessions were all lost.Ā

Residents described Vergilio as a hardworking and caring grandfather who has continued to raise his grandchildren following the death of his wife. Despite the challenges of daily life, he remained committed to supporting and looking after his family. 

The incident has touched many netizens, with several residents expressing sympathy for the family’s situation. Calls for assistance have also begun circulating, encouraging those who are willing to donate food, clothing, medicines, household items, or financial support.
