Lineman Dies of Electrocution While Repairing Power Lines in Cagayan
A lineman lost his life after being electrocuted and falling from a bucket truck while repairing power lines in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
The victim was identified as Michael Fernandez, a resident of Solana, Cagayan, and an employee of the Cagayan Electric Cooperative. The accident happened while he was carrying out maintenance work on electrical lines as part of his duties.
According to reports, Fernandez and his team were working on power lines that had already been shut down to ensure the safety of the crew. Deactivating the electrical lines is a standard procedure during repair and maintenance operations to prevent accidents and protect workers from live electricity.
However, an unexpected situation reportedly occurred during the operation. Company officials explained that a resident in the area was using a generator, which allegedly caused a phenomenon known as “back feed.”
Back feed happens when electricity flows back into power lines that are believed to be de-energized, creating a serious hazard for workers performing repairs.
Authorities said the unexpected flow of electricity allegedly struck Fernandez while he was working from a bucket truck. The electric shock caused him to lose control and fall from the elevated work platform.
Co-workers and emergency responders immediately rushed to help the injured lineman. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he was declared dead before receiving further treatment.
Linemen often work in dangerous conditions to restore and maintain electrical services, particularly during emergencies and repairs.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of a dedicated worker whose life was cut short while serving the community.
