Grade 4 Student Passes Away After School Deworming Activity in Cavite

A Grade 4 student from Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex in Trece Martires City, Cavite, reportedly died following a school deworming activity.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Cavite Province and the school are investigating the school’s deworming activity. Officials immediately coordinated with the concerned agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

According to reports, the eight-year-old pupil began experiencing symptoms such as headache, stomach pain, vomiting, fever, and nosebleeding after receiving deworming medication as part of the school’s health program.

The medicine was reportedly given during a deworming activity conducted with the assistance of the local City Health Office.

Family members of the child have appealed to authorities for a thorough investigation. They are seeking a deeper medical examination, including an autopsy, to help determine the exact cause of death and provide answers regarding what happened to their child.

DepEd Cavite expressed sympathy to the grieving family and assured the public that it is fully cooperating with the investigation. School personnel and education officials have also committed to assisting authorities in any way necessary while the case is being reviewed.

Information released by DepEd stated that several students reportedly felt unwell after the deworming activity, including the Grade 4 pupil who was later brought to the hospital after experiencing severe vomiting.

The reported cause of death was an infection that led to septic shock, based on initial medical findings.

However, authorities emphasized that investigations are still ongoing to fully understand the sequence of events and determine whether other factors may have contributed to the incident.

DepEd is reviewing its health and safety protocols to ensure the welfare of students during school health programs. Health officials are also conducting their own assessment to establish all the facts surrounding the student’s death and provide clarity to the family and the public.
