DepEd Releases Official Statement After Death of Grade 4 Student Following School Deworming Activity
The Department of Education (DepEd) has released a statement following the death of a Grade 4 student after a deworming activity conducted at the school.
Recently, the official Facebook page of DepEd Philippines released a statement regarding the death of the Grade 4 student after being given deworming medicine by a class adviser. The post quickly went viral and drew various reactions online.
According to DepEd, the agency is closely coordinating with health authorities as investigations continue. The department said that understanding the full circumstances surrounding the incident remains a priority.
The school conducted a routine deworming activity on July 2, 2026, in partnership with the City Health Office. After the activity, several students from Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex in Trece Martires City, Cavite reportedly felt unwell. Among them was the Grade 4 learner who was later hospitalized after experiencing vomiting.
Based on initial medical findings, the student’s death was linked to an infection that eventually led to septic shock. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that further examinations are being conducted.
DepEd Cavite Province and the faculty and staff of Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex expressed deep sadness over the loss of the young learner. The department also extended its condolences to the family, loved ones, and the entire school community affected by the incident..
In its statement, the Education Department assured the public that it is not ignoring the incident and is continuously working with the proper agencies.
The agency is also reviewing its health and safety protocols to help ensure the welfare and protection of students during future school health programs, as of this writing the family continues to seek answers as authorities work to determine the details surrounding the student’s death.
