In a video circulating online, Jonas Gaffud was spotted throwing something hard at a staff member during a technical mishap at the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 pageant. The people around them were clearly shocked by what the Miss Universe Philippines CEO and president boldly did in public.
Recently, an MUPH official spoke about the matter and explained that the moment was misunderstood and blown out of proportion. Miss Universe Philippines Executive Vice President Voltaire Tayag revealed the story behind the incident.
According to Tayag, Gaffud was frustrated when the microphones started malfunctioning. He was trying to call the production.
Tayag was with him that time and shared, “It was very clear he did not make hampas to anyone. In fact, natawa nga ako. In my mind, ‘Oh my gosh, baka nasira niya yung phone niya.’ And seconds later, he looked at it. Later on, I was even joking at him, ‘At least meron tayong sponsor na phone.'”
From his perspective, he fully understood where Jonas was coming from. It was a crucial moment for them, and they were aiming for perfection. Everything went smoothly, but not until the malfunction happened. They knew that, despite doing 98% of the whole project correctly, people would only remember the wrong ones at 2%.
Defending Jonas, he said, “And it’s unfair for him to be judged by people. To be bashed for that one incident. Throughout all of this time, where are all the people talking about the good things that he’s done, the good things that he’s done for the pageant industry, for Miss Universe Philippines and the delegates?”
He hopes people will appreciate all the good things he has done in the industry and clarified that he did not throw the phone at anyone.
