The Holy Week, one of the most widely-observed religious traditions across the globe, is the time when Christians remember the events leading to the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. During this sacred week, the Church organizes various gatherings and ceremonies that draw large crowds of the faithful.
Among the central observances of Holy Week is Holy Thursday. During this day, the Christians commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus with His closest companions, His disciples. It is on this day that the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist was instituted by the Son of God. He also instituted the foundation of the priesthood.
During the Passover meal which is recalled on Holy Thursday, Jesus Christ broke the bread and gave it to His disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you.” He then shared a cup of wine after he declared — “This is my blood.”
Up to this day, Christians believe that the bread and wine symbolize the body and blood of Christ, the food of eternal life. In Catholic belief, the faithful believe that these elements are transformed during Mass into the true body and blood of the Lord.
