Did the United States Just Enter a Full-Blown War w/ Iran?
IRAN – What began as a diplomatic deadlock over Iran’s nuclear ambitions has suddenly erupted into one of the most dramatic military confrontations of the decade.
The United States has launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran, joining forces with Israel in what officials described as large-scale combat operations. The offensive, named “Epic Fury” by Washington and “Lion’s Roar” by Israel, began early Saturday following the collapse of recent negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Why did the US strike Iran?
Shortly after blasts were reported in Tehran, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of conducting what he called a long-running campaign of violence against American interests. He argued that Iranian leaders had refused multiple chances to abandon their nuclear ambitions and alleged that Tehran was advancing long-range missile technology capable of threatening Europe, US forces abroad, and eventually the American mainland.
Trump also pointed to historical flashpoints between the two countries, including the 1979 hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran and the 1983 bombing of a US Marine barracks in Beirut. He maintained that military action was necessary to counter what he described as escalating threats.
The strikes came just two days after US-Iran talks ended without agreement. Last year, US air raids targeted three Iranian nuclear sites in a separate operation. That earlier escalation contributed to a brief but intense 12-day confrontation between Iran and Israel, during which both sides exchanged missile and drone attacks before a ceasefire was reached.
Is Iran’s supreme leader dead?
President Trump announced that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in the strikes. Iranian state television later confirmed his death at age 86 and declared a 40-day mourning period. Satellite imagery reportedly showed significant damage near his office in Tehran. Intelligence sources have indicated that dozens of other Iranian officials may also have been killed.
Is the US officially at war?
Although Trump described the operation as “major combat operations,” the United States has not formally declared war. Under the US Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war, though presidents have broad powers to conduct military action. The strikes have reignited debate in Washington over war powers. Many Republicans voiced support, while Democrats criticized the president for acting without congressional approval and renewed calls for a war powers resolution.
Will US troops enter Iran?
There are currently tens of thousands of US troops stationed at bases across the Middle East, along with aircraft carriers and advanced fighter jets in the region. However, there has been no announcement of a ground invasion, and military involvement so far has been limited to air operations.
Casualties and regional impact
Iranian authorities report more than 200 deaths and hundreds injured nationwide. An explosion at a school in southern Iran reportedly killed over 100 people. In Israel, at least one person died after a missile strike in Tel Aviv. Iran has also launched retaliatory attacks against countries hosting US forces, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
With further bombing expected in the coming days, the situation remains volatile, and the death toll could continue to climb.
