Juvenile Alamid Meant for ‘Pulutan’ Rescued in Marinduque

Juvenile Alamid Saved From Slaughter in Marinduque

A juvenile alamid or young Asian Palm Civet was rescued in Mogpog, Marinduque after it was almost killed for food.

On Friday, February 27, 2026, the animal was caught by a resident using a trap made from nylon string, according to the Marinduque Provincial Veterinary Office. The civet was reportedly meant to be slaughtered and served as a drinking snack.

Fortunately, a concerned citizen stepped in and warned the person who caught it that the alamid is a protected species. Hunting, killing, selling, or eating it is against the law.

The Provincial Veterinary Office’s Animal and Wildlife Rescue Emergency Response Team quickly responded to the situation. They examined the young civet and treated a wound on its left leg caused by the trap. The team made sure to handle the animal gently to prevent further stress.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. JM Victoria shared that civets are very sensitive animals. They can easily become stressed and may take a long time to recover. Because of this, proper care is very important while the animal heals.

The rescued civet was identified as a juvenile based on the development of its teeth. Experts explained that it is difficult to determine the exact age of civets, so they are usually classified as juvenile, sub-adult, or adult. In this case, not all of the animal’s teeth had fully grown yet.

Its exact gender has not yet been confirmed. Since civets can have both male and female traits, a special laboratory test is needed to determine which organ is dominant.

The alamid is protected under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001. It plays an important role in the forest by helping spread seeds. Once fully healed and strong again, the civet will be turned over to the proper environmental authorities so it can return safely to its natural habitat.
