VP Sara Duterte: 2017 versus 2026 Statements About EDSA Revolution

2017 versus 2026 remarks of VP Sara Duterte surface online.

VP Sara Duterte earned attention online after people recalled her 2017 remarks about the EDSA People Power Revolution.

This year is the 40th year since the EDSA People Power Revolution happened. Roads around the Edsa People Power Monument will be closed on Wednesday for activities commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1986 revolution.

EDSA People Power Revolution

Several church and civil society groups have organized prayer rallies, peaceful demonstrations, and masses to mark the February 25 anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, including the “Trillion Peso March 3.”

However, on this day, VP Sara Duterte went viral due to her different and clashing remarks about this historical event.

In 2017, Duterte was quoted as questioning why the peaceful people power revolt that toppled the Marcos dictatorship became the “standard definition” of freedom in the Philippines.

She said:

“I find it hard to understand why this bloodless revolution has become the standard definition of freedom for our country and this standard is forced down our throats by a certain group of individuals who think they are better than everyone else.”

In 2026, as she spoke to the reporters in a chance interview in Iligan City, she finally ended her streak of not commenting on this yearly commemoration of the EDSA revolution. According to her, people may have forgotten what the essence of the 1986 revolution is.

She said:

“Nakalimutan na ata ng mga tao kung ano yung essence ng 1986 EDSA Revolution. “‘Yung mga magmamartsa bukas, nag-o-organize bukas, hindi talaga nila alam kung ano ba talaga ‘yung mensahe nila sa taong bayan kasi nalimutan nila kung ano ‘yung message noong 1986.”

Meanwhile, according to the Quezon City government, the following roads will be temporarily closed starting at 8 AM on Wednesday:

  • Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa)
  • Katipunan Avenue
  • Ortigas Avenue
  • Temple Drive
  • White Plains Avenue – closed from 6 AM

Moreover, the Quezon City government said the following are possible parking areas:

  • Temple drive up to Giraffe Street (for light vehicles)
  • B. Serrano Avenue east bound – one-side parking (for buses)
  • 18th and 20th Avenue (for light vehicles and buses)
  • Along Edsa from People Power Monument up to GHQ-Gate 3 (friendly forces parking)
