February 25 May Soon Become a Regular Holiday If Chel Diokno Gets His Way
CHEL DIOKNO – Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno has filed a bill that could change how Filipinos commemorate one of the most pivotal moments in Philippine history.
Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno has filed a bill seeking to declare February 25 a regular national holiday in commemoration of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
In his proposal, Diokno emphasized that the date represents more than just a chapter in Philippine history. According to him, it also marks the unity of Filipinos who came together to restore democracy in the country. The lawmaker believes that institutionalizing the holiday as a regular national holiday would ensure that the significance of the historic event is preserved and properly honored every year.

Diokno pointed out that the importance of the date appears diminished due to changes in holiday declarations in recent years. He noted that in 2023, it was declared a non-working holiday; in 2024, it was recognized as a regular holiday; and last year and this year, it was declared a special working holiday. For the congressman, these shifts may affect how Filipinos value and remember the event.
The measure, filed as House Bill 7911, also encourages all government agencies and offices, schools, and civil society groups to hold programs and activities that highlight the significance of the peaceful uprising and the end of the Marcos Sr. administration. Through these initiatives, Diokno hopes that younger generations will gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made during that period in Philippine history.

He further stated that the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) will lead the commemorative activities should the bill be enacted into law. The commission is expected to spearhead efforts to ensure that the anniversary is observed in a meaningful and educational manner across the country.
By pushing for the declaration of February 25 as a regular national holiday, Diokno aims to reinforce the enduring legacy of the People Power Revolution and the democratic ideals it symbolizes for the Filipino people.
