DepEd to Hire Tutors Under Massive ₱1 Trillion 2026 Budget Push

DepEd Expands Learning Support w/ Tutor Hiring in 2026

DEPED – With a historic budget exceeding ₱1 trillion, the Department of Education is rolling out new measures aimed at improving student learning outcomes across the country.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to hire tutors this year as part of its initiatives funded by its historic budget allocation of over ₱1 trillion for 2026. This move comes in addition to the planned hiring of more teachers, reflecting the government’s intensified efforts to address long-standing challenges in the country’s education system.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian shared this development, citing discussions with Education Secretary Sonny Angara during the signing of the ₱6.79 trillion national budget by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at Malacañang. According to Gatchalian, the unprecedented funding provides DepEd with the resources needed to strengthen academic support programs, particularly for learners who are struggling to keep up in school.

One of the key focuses of the tutoring initiative is to help students who are having difficulty with reading, a concern that has persisted in many public schools. Gatchalian emphasized that additional academic intervention is crucial, as reading proficiency forms the foundation of learning across all subjects. Without proper support, students who fall behind early may continue to struggle throughout their academic journey.

The tutoring program is expected to be flexible in its approach. Gatchalian explained that tutorials may be conducted either through one-on-one sessions or group tutorials, depending on the needs of the learners. This setup aims to provide more personalized instruction, allowing tutors to closely monitor students’ progress and address specific learning gaps more effectively than traditional classroom settings.

Aside from academic interventions, the DepEd will also allocate a portion of its budget to strengthen its feeding program. Gatchalian pointed out that a significant number of students are undernourished or underweight, which negatively affects their ability to concentrate and perform well in school. By improving nutrition among learners, the department hopes to create a healthier learning environment that supports both physical and cognitive development.

With the combination of hiring additional teachers, engaging tutors, and expanding feeding programs, DepEd aims to use its record-breaking budget to deliver more comprehensive support to Filipino students. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to improving education quality and ensuring that learners receive the assistance they need to succeed inside and outside the classroom.
