5-Year-Old Boy Loses Sight in Left Eye After Firecracker Accident in Iloilo

5-Year-Old Boy in Iloilo Lost Eyesight After Being Hit by Boga

A five-year-old boy has lost his sight in left eye after being hit by a firecracker locally known as ‘Boga’ in Passi City, Iloilo.

On Friday (December 19, 2025), the child was playing near his home in Barangay Agdahon when the tragic incident happened.

Based on the investigation of the Passi City police, the young boy, identified by the nickname Matmat, was playing with his seven-year-old neighbor and his ten-year-old older brother. The children were handling a boga, a type of improvised firecracker that is often treated as a toy by kids despite its dangers.

At one point, while the older brother was holding the boga, it was suddenly pointed toward the younger child’s face and set off. The explosion happened at close range, leaving the five-year-old severely injured.

Family members and neighbors immediately rushed to help and brought the child to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctors performed surgery on the child, but the damage caused by the strong impact of the explosion was too severe. As a result, the child lost vision in his left eye. Medical experts later said that the boy now needs an eye donor due to the permanent loss of sight caused by the accident.

The incident marks the first reported firecracker-related injury in the area for the month of December. It has raised serious concern among residents, especially as the holiday season approaches and the use of firecrackers becomes more common.

The accident reminds the public of how dangerous firecrackers can be, especially when handled by children. Authorities continue to remind parents and guardians to closely watch over their children and keep them away from dangerous items.
