LTO Requires E-Trikes to Register Starting January 2026
The Land Transportation Office has announced that starting January 2026, e-trikes weighing more than 50 kilos will be required to register with the agency.
The announcement comes as part of a wider effort to regulate the growing number of electric vehicles on the road, especially those often seen violating traffic rules.
The discussion began after Senator Raffy Tulfo, chair of the Senate Public Services Committee, asked the LTO what steps they were taking to control the misuse of e-trikes and e-bikes. During a consultative meeting, the senator recommended the implementation of a special driver’s license for e-trike users, especially those using their units for public transport.

Tulfo stressed the need for discipline on the road and explained that responsible drivers from other sectors should not be placed at a disadvantage.
The lawmaker pointed out that even when e-trike riders are caught committing violations or get involved in accidents, authorities often cannot issue tickets because these riders have no license at all.
He added that while he has no problem with e-bikes and e-trikes, it is time to set clear rules so the roads do not become chaotic.

The LTO welcomed the proposal. Under the plan, e-trike drivers who use their vehicles for livelihood will need a professional driver’s license. Meanwhile, parents and private users who operate e-trikes for personal errands or to bring their children to school will be required to get a non-professional license.
LTO Executive Director Atty. Greg Pua Jr. shared that e-trikes will be registered as light vehicles and will be charged lower fees. To make the process faster, the agency will also set up special lanes dedicated to e-trike registration.
He added that aside from making the fees more affordable, the LTO aims to make the entire process more convenient for users.
