Ferdinand Dela Merced’s Trouble in Negros Oriental

Negros Oriental to Ban Ferdinand Dela Merced After Controversial Remarks

FERDINAND DELA MERCED – A visit meant to inspire has instead stirred outrage, as Ferdinand Dela Merced faces public backlash and a possible persona non grata declaration in Negros Oriental.

Filipino looper Ferdinand Dela Merced is under fire in Negros Oriental after posting a series of social media comments criticizing the province and its local officials. Based on reports, the provincial board is preparing to declare him persona non grata following the online controversy.

The issue started when Dela Merced, who is undertaking his “Walk Towards Guinness World Records” project, took to social media to express frustration that the Provincial Tourism Office did not recognize or accommodate his arrival. He explained that he reached Negros Oriental on November 1, 2025, a public holiday, when government offices were closed.

Ferdinand Dela Merced also mentioned that the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) was occupied with preparations for the approaching Typhoon Tino during his visit. He said he wanted to coordinate with PDRRMO personnel for assistance or an escort during his walk across the country, but claimed he received no response or acknowledgment.

Upset by the situation, Dela Merced shared posts online announcing his decision to leave the province, citing his disappointment. Later, he clarified through a video message that the City Government had actually assisted him and that he was taken to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) located at City High. However, by then, his earlier statements had already sparked widespread criticism.

Adding fuel to the fire, Dela Merced made remarks seemingly minimizing the threat of the incoming storm, saying that “typhoons happen every year” while his advocacy was something “rare.” Many residents and social media users condemned his statement as insensitive, pointing out that officials were prioritizing safety amid the impending disaster.

Following the uproar, Provincial Board Member Erwin Macias, who chairs the Committee on Disaster Response, announced that he would propose a resolution declaring Dela Merced persona non grata in the province. Once enacted, the declaration would mean that Dela Merced would no longer be welcome in any part of Negros Oriental.

This controversy has become another blow to Dela Merced’s nationwide campaign, which began as a mission of inspiration but is now clouded by public criticism and allegations of arrogance.
