Cebu Mall Turns Into River After Flooding Brought by Typhoon Tino Hit Province

A mall in Cebu turned into what looked like a flowing river after heavy flooding brought by Typhoon Tino hit the province.

Recently, Michael Angelo Gala, a Facebook user, shared photos of the flooded mall and how water had spread across the floor as if there was a stream inside the building. The post garnered various reactions from the online community.

Shoppers and mall staff at SM City Consolacion in Consolacion, Cebu were shocked when floodwater entered the ground floor, leaving the area soaked and slippery. Many netizens expressed worry for those who were caught inside during the incident.

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro voiced her disappointment, noting that despite the government’s P26-billion budget for flood control, such incidents continue to occur. She stressed that the flooding should serve as a wake-up call to ensure that the allocated funds are properly used to prevent future disasters.

Cebu Provincial Administrator Joseph “Ace” Durano explained that the local government did not expect such severe flooding. He said the overflowing of major rivers, combined with the high tide, caused the water to backflow instead of draining to sea.

Durano added that rivers from Talisay City to Danao City overflowed due to the large volume of rainfall. The combination of heavy rain and high tide created a situation that was difficult to predict.

Residents and local authorities are now working together to clean up and assess the damage. The incident has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of flood control projects and the need for stronger measures to protect communities from the increasing threat of extreme weather.
