ALL SOULS DAY 2025 – Which practices do you observe? Here are some that you might want to know and hear about.
As Filipinos observe All Souls’ Day, this day goes beyond remembering our departed loved ones. It is also a time to observe long-held beliefs and customs passed down through generations. From lighting candles and offering prayers, what else are you observing this day?

Here are some Filipino superstitions:
- When it rains, it symbolizes the tears of the dead, and it is believed that the souls are crying.
- Candles are lit to honor the dead, serving as an extension of prayers that get repeated over and over again as long as the light is on. One candle is for one deceased family member. It is believed that these guide the soul home.
- Relatives bring food and delicacies to the cemetery.
- Food is offered to the dead and placed on the altar. It is believed that the souls join in prayers and partake of food. Some also offer food on the graves.
- Sweeping the floor, especially after visiting the cemetery, would mean sweeping away the spirits of loved ones who have come to visit.
- This day must be quiet and peaceful for solemnity. Creating noise, laughter, or parties is seen as disrespectful to the spirits.
- After coming home from the cemetery, there were some who sprinkled salt or washed with water with boiled guava leaves. This act is believed to keep bad spirits from following them.
- Wandering souls are believed to be most active on this day; hence, traveling or going out at night must be avoided.
- Leaving a light or a lighted candle overnight helps lost souls find peace and prevents them from lingering.
