DOST Says Recent Earthquakes in Philippines Are Normal

DOST Assures Public That Series Earthquakes of Earthquakes Across PH Are Normal

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said that recent earthquakes in the Philippines are normal.

The agency assured the public that the series of earthquakes recently felt in different parts of the country are normal and nothing to panic about.

According to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., the Philippines experiences frequent earthquakes because it lies along active faults and trenches. These natural formations constantly move, causing small and sometimes strong tremors.

He explained that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) records around 30 earthquakes every day, which is why it’s not surprising when people occasionally feel stronger ones.

Secretary Solidum also clarified that the recent earthquakes in Cebu, Davao, Zambales, and La Union are not connected to one another since they come from different fault systems. This means that each event happened independently due to the natural movement of the Earth’s crust.

“That’s normal because of active faults and trenches… So, it’s not unusual that some areas feel strong earthquakes,” Solidum said.

The DOST official reminded the public that while earthquakes cannot be predicted or prevented, people can stay safe by being prepared. He emphasized the importance of following the National Building Code to make sure buildings are strong enough to withstand strong quakes.

Solidum also encouraged everyone to practice safety drills like the “Drop, Cover, and Hold” technique during earthquakes. Having a Go Bag ready with essentials such as water, food, flashlight, medicine, and important documents can also help in case there’s a need to evacuate quickly.

Earthquakes are part of life in the Philippines, but with proper awareness and preparation, communities can reduce risks and stay safe. The DOST continues to remind everyone to stay alert, calm, and ready for any emergency.
