Davao Oriental Under State Of Calamity Following Twin Earthquakes

Following the massive earthquake, Davao Oriental was declared under a state of calamity.

The municipal government of Manay, Davao Oriental, has declared a state of calamity after powerful twin earthquakes struck it.

A strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental at 9:43 AM on Friday, October 10. It was initially reported to have a 7.6 magnitude, but was later downgraded to 7.4, and the destructive shaking has left a massive aftermath. The shaking was felt widely across Mindanao.

Hours later, at 7:12 PM, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake followed and struck nearby. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) stated that the earthquakes were likely to cause damage and be followed by aftershocks.

A combined total of 569 aftershocks have so far been recorded after the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 quakes occurred as of 11 PM, ranging from 1.2 to 6.8.

Due to this situation, the province was put under a state of calamity. Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang shared that municipalities have already declared a state of calamity, but some have yet to do it, as they wait for their resolution and declaration.

As of 8 AM on Thursday, more than 66,000 families suffered from the effects. More than 100 households were totally damaged, and over 500 were partially damaged.

After the inspection, authorities found that the Manay District Hospital was no longer safe to use due to the extensive damage caused by the strong quake. DPWH’s Vince Dizon, DSWD’s Rex Gatchalian, and DepEd’s Sonny Angara met with Dayanghirang, where Dizon confirmed that the hospital could no longer be utilized because of the destruction it sustained.

“It’s heavily damaged, structurally, so we cannot use them. Malakihang gawa ang kailangan gawin dito. We will have to use temporary medical tents because all the buildings here are unusable right now,” he said.
