VP Sara Duterte revealed that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was found unconscious inside the detention facility of the ICC.
Last March, former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and was then immediately flown to The Hague for detention. The Philippine authorities assisted the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in his arrest, and it took place upon his arrival from Hong Kong.
In the latest development, Duterte was charged with three counts of murder.
Recently, the Duterte family has received “credible information” about the former president being found unconscious on the floor of his room inside the detention facility of the ICC.
Vice President Sara Duterte claimed in a statement that their family was not informed of what happened to her father. The former president was then subjected to laboratory tests after the incident.
“These alarming developments raise grave concerns about the capacity of the ICC to guarantee the security and safety of FPRRD,” the statement read.
It added that the continued detention under “troubling conditions” is not just unjust but also inhumane. They insisted that it equaled “punishment without having been convicted of any crime.”
The ICC is accordingly cruel “to deprive an elderly man of basic dignity and proper care is not justice” – a man who was “abducted, denied his rights under Philippine law, and subjected to surveillance disguised as ‘welfare checks’.”
In the statement, the vice president also shared that they were informed of what had happened but were not given any explanation. According to the younger Duterte, her father’s prolonged detention has no justification other than “to make him suffer for the complaint of a disgraced former senator.”
