House Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun Speaks on Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez Following Resignation as House Speaker

JAY KHONGHUN – The House Deputy Speaker and Zambales Representative spoke on Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez who just resigned as House Speaker.

Many Filipinos were surprised when it was confirmed early today that House Speaker Martin Romualdez is resigning from his position as the chief of the House of Representatives. The rumors was confirmed by Antipolo City 1st District Rep. Ronaldo Puno.

Several personnel of the House of Representatives were spotted on Tuesday night bringing out the things of Romualdez from the House Speaker’s Office. One of those that were spotted was his nameplate and it triggered speculations about his possible resignation.

Romualdez, the cousin of Pres. Bongbong Marcos, is one of the government officials who are facing corruption accusations amid the flood control mess in the country. His name was one of those mentioned by controversial contractors Pacifico and Sarah Discaya in their joint testimony during a Senate hearing.

The Discayas dropped the names of the individuals who allegedly receive kickbacks from the flood control projects awarded to their companies. According to the couple, House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Zaldy Co supposedly take 30% kickback from the flood control deals.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez denied the claims of the Discayas that links him to the flood control project issue in the country now. He stressed that he is “self-made” and does not need to be corrupted by money that aren’t his. According to him, those people who use his name for their benefits must be held accountable.

During a House flood probe, Pacifico Discaya claimed that he never had a direct transaction with the Speaker. Amid the unexpected turn of events, House Deputy Speaker and Zambales Cong. Jay Khonghun claimed that Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez’s resignation from being the House Speaker is a “sacrifice”.

According to the House Deputy Speaker, Romualdez now has the time to answer the accusations against him. Upon confirming the resignation of the House Speaker, Antipolo Rep. Ronaldo Puno claimed that the Speaker is looking after the reputation of the chamber.

Recently, House Speaker Martin Romualdez had a meeting with the House leaders including House Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun and incoming Speaker Bodjie Dy. Based on a post of GMA News on social media, Khonghun stressed that Romualdez is okay and in a good mood. He assured that everything is well.

“Well Speaker Romualdez is in a good mood at okay naman siya at nakapag-usap na sila ni incoming Speaker Bodjie Dy at kakatapos lang ng leadership meeting. Everything’s well,” Khonghun said.

Amid the flood control mess and the creation of the Independent Commission on Infrastructure tasked to investigate the infra projects of the government. Pres. Bongbong Marcos assured that his cousin, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and his allies will not be spared from the flood control probe.
