Multi-awarded actress Judy Ann Santos is annoyed at the news about corruption, but sees this as a wake-up call for the people.
Previously, President Bongbong Marcos issued Executive Order (EO) 94, creating the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to probe the alleged corruption in billions-worth of flood control projects.
The ICI is an independent fact-finding panel tasked to “hear, investigate, and collect evidence” regarding irregularities, fund misuse, and corruption in the planning, financing, and execution of government projects—especially flood control initiatives—over the past decade.
President Marcos expressed support for the anti-corruption movement that has plagued flood-control projects. The Philippines is one of Asia’s most typhoon-prone countries, and despite the large amount spent on projects, several areas across the country remained easily drenched and submerged because of alleged anomalies.
Recently, Judy Ann Santos, one of the celebrities who pays big in taxes, reacted to this and minced no words in expressing her thoughts. She feels annoyed hearing news about how officials and politicians heartlessly pocket the public’s money.
But more than the anger, what she feels now is being worried as to where this outrage could take people. She said, “Natapos na yung galit ko. Nandun na lang ako sa panghihinayang na parang natatakot ako sa taumbayan sa kung ano ang puwedeng mangyari sa kanila sa ginagawa nilang pakikibaka. But, karapatan nila yun, e. Hindi natin mapigilan ang galit ng taumbayan.”
Paying taxes is a duty, but for her, the present situation could be an eye-opener for many. She believes that certain events are meant to happen to reveal the real issues we face. Some storms do not come to destroy what we have, but to show us the path.
“Pero rampant na lang, napakalala. Nakakahiya na tayo,” she quipped.
