An 18-year-old student was unintentionally caught in a shooting incident just outside a university in Abra.

Last Friday afternoon (August 22, 2025), the victim, who had no involvement in the conflict, was struck in the leg after two other students reportedly fired gunshots in connection to an old grudge. The incident took place just outside a university in in Lagangilang, Abra.

According to the police, the suspects are a 24-year-old and a 17-year-old student who had a previous dispute with another group. On August 22, the two allegedly encountered their rivals outside the school premises.

“Nagkasalubong ulit ang suspek na allegedly lasing at ang nakaalitan niya sa labas ng compound ng school. Doon na pinaputukan ng suspek ng tatlong beses sakay ng motorsiklo yung kaalitan niya before pero … ang natamaan doon sa pangatlong putok ay itong biktima natin,” Lagangilang Police Station OIC PCpt. Reylan Balingway said.

Witnesses said one of them, who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, fired three shots while riding a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the third bullet missed its intended target and hit the bystander.

The young victim was rushed to a hospital where he is scheduled for surgery to treat his leg injury. Authorities confirmed that he was simply passing by at the wrong time, making him an innocent casualty of the altercation.

After the gunfire, the suspects quickly fled on a motorcycle. Days later, on August 25, the family of the driver voluntarily turned him over to the authorities. He has since been placed under the care of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, given his age.

Police are now collecting statements from witnesses to clarify the events and decide what charges should be filed. Investigators stressed the importance of accurate testimonies to establish accountability, as details of the confrontation remain unclear.

Meanwhile, the second suspect is still being pursued by law enforcers. Authorities are calling on the community to cooperate and provide any information that could help in resolving the case.
