Viral K9 Dog ‘Slim’ Due to Recent Training – RECU-NCR
RECU-NCR has released an official statement regarding the viral photo of a slim K9 dog stating that it just came from training.
Recently, the Regional Explosive and Canine Unit – National Capital Region (RECU-NCR) has spoken up after a photo of a slim K9 dog went viral online and drew concern from netizens. Many had worried about the dog’s health after seeing its thin body.
The viral k9 dog is named Kobe, a police service dog assigned to the District EOD and Canine Unit under the Manila Police District. Kobe is an experienced and well-trained explosive detection dog who has been serving across Metro Manila.

The agency explained that Kobe had just completed a 15-day refresher training held from May 26 to June 13, 2025. The training was physically demanding and tested his skills in detecting explosives, which may explain his leaner appearance.
They assured the public that Kobe is in good health and physically fit for duty. The slimness is not a sign of neglect but a result of rigorous training and exercise, which is common for working dogs, especially the Belgian Malinois breed.

The agency emphasized that all K9 units receive proper food, care, and regular checkups from licensed veterinarians. The health and well-being of their service dogs remain a top priority.
The unit also said that all dogs go through strict screening and must meet proper qualifications before being deployed.
RECU-NCR thanked the public for their concern and reassured everyone that their canine partners are well looked after and treated as important members of their team in public service.
