Audience at Marcos Jr. SONA 2025 Laughed at President’s Mention of PNP Chief Torre
MARCOS JR. – The President lightened the mood during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2025 by mentioning Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III as the ‘new boxing champion’.
The 20th Congress has officially opened and Pres. Bongbong Marcos recently delivered his 4th SONA at the Batasang Pambansa. Many senators, members of the House of Representatives, members of the Marcos Cabinet, and government officials were spotted at the annual event.
During the Marcos SONA 2025, Pres. Bongbong Marcos mentioned the projects of the government as well as a stern warning to corrupt officials who pocket the money of the people. He also assured the people that education remains at the center of the priorities of his administration in the last three (3) years of his term.
The mood for the SONA of the President was serious until Marcos Jr. unexpectedly mentioned PNP chief Police Gen. Nicolas Torre in his speech. What the President did sparked laughter and smiles from the audience and lightened the mood at the event.
Marcos Jr. mentioned PNP chief Nicolas Torre III along with the other champions in the different fields of sports in the country. Based on a report on Inquirer, the President claimed that the youth are exposed to sports early because of the work of agencies like the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
According to the President, because of the PSC and the PAGCOR, many Filipino youth acquire skills and confidence at an early age. He stressed that these allow them to follow in the footsteps of their idols in sports.
“They follow in the steps of our champions and world-class athletes like (former senator) Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Caloy Yulo, Ira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, Alex Eala … let’s include our new champ, PNP chief Nic Torre,” Marcos Jr said.
Based on the report, Pres. Bongbong Marcos also chuckled at his joke and said the PNP Chief must have been surprised. Torre stood from the crowd and acknowledged the Chief Executive.
PNP chief Nicolas Torre previously accepted the “fistfight challenge” of acting Davao Mayor Baste Duterte and proposed a charity boxing match. There were really preparations for their match which was supposedly held last Sunday but Duterte did not arrive.
The acting Davao Mayor is in Singapore and he also previously laid his own conditions. He wants Torre to ask Pres. Bongbong Marcos to order the drug testing of all the government officials.
Prior to the SONA of Marcos Jr. yesterday, during a press briefing, PNP chief Nicolas Torre spoke about acting Davao Mayor Baste Duterte referring to him as “monkey”.
