Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero Remains in the Lead in 20th Congress
CHIZ ESCUDERO – The Senate President remains in his position after winning the Senate presidency versus Sen. Tito Sotto in the 20th Congress.
With the opening of the 20th Congress, the senators decided on who will take the highest position in the Senate. It was Senate Pres. Escudero who was the chief of the chamber when the 19th Congress adjourned.
Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero previously confirmed being open to be the Senate president in the 20th Congress. Sen. Joel Villanueva previously claimed that at least 13 senators including him were set to support Escudero to remain in his post.
Aside from Escudero, another name that floated for the Senate president was Sen. Tito Sotto, also a former Senate president. He led the chamber in the 18th Congress prior to the end of his third term as lawmaker.
According to Sen. JV Ejercito, he will vote for Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero but he is grateful to both the current leadership and Sen. Tito Sotto. The Duterte bloc also committed their vote for Escudero as confirmed by Sen. Bato dela Rosa prior to the election for Senate president.
Recently, the Senate presidential race between Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero and Sen. Tito Sotto has concluded. Based on a report on GMA News, the current leadership remains after Escudero garnered 19 votes.

The veterans or “conscience bloc” composed of senators Loren Legarda, Tito Sotto, Ping Lacson, and Juan Miguel Zubiri as well as opposition Sen. Risa Hontiveros voted for Sotto for the Senate presidency.
Based on the report, Sen. Joel Villanueva will be the Senate majority leader in the 20th Congress while Sen. Jinggoy Estrada was reelected as the Senate president pro tempore. Previously, Sen. Raffy Tulfo spoke about his support for Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero to remain in his post.
