Teacher Disappointed Over Low Spelling Quiz Scores of Grade 12 Students

Teacher Expresses Dismay After Seeing Results of Spelling Quiz of Grade 12 Students

A teacher from Northern Samar expressed his disappointment after seeing the results of a simple spelling quiz given to his Grade 12 students.

Recently, Neil Bugsok, a Facebook user, shared photos of the quiz results given to his Grade 12 students. The quiz was part of their Media and Information Literacy (MIL) class. The post garnered various reactions from the online community.

The students reportedly laughed at their low scores instead of feeling concerned. According to the teacher, the spelling quiz was based directly on lessons he presented using PowerPoint in class prior to the exam.

He also noted a possible reason for the students’ struggles, an overreliance on Artificial Intelligence tools for schoolwork. Since students often use these tools to write essays and answer assignments, their spelling and writing skills may be taking a backseat.

Before the quiz started, he collected their phones to prevent cheating. That’s when he noticed a clear difference in performance. Without access to gadgets or online tools, many students revealed a worrying gap in basic language skills. Many of them failed the quiz.

Because of this, Teacher Neil is calling on fellow educators, parents, and the Department of Education to bring back spelling booklets in the high school curriculum. He believes this could help rebuild the foundations of spelling, especially for senior high school students.

The post wasn’t just to express his frustration, but also to raise awareness and encourage a community-wide effort to improve students’ learning habits and basic writing abilities.

At ang tunay na MIL pala ay:

“Mali ang Ispeling Lagi”

So alarming po. Need talaga na ibalik ang Spelling Booklet sa eskwelahan.

Tuwa pa sila sa kanilang mga score”
