Alan Peter Cayetano’s Resolution for Duterte’s House Arrest Unlikely To Be Recognized by ICC — Lawyer

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano Files Resolution Urging PH Gov’t To Call for Duterte’s ICC Interim Release Grant

ALAN PETER CAYETANO – A lawyer believes that the resolution of the Senator is unlikely to be heard by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte is detained under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for more than 100 days now. Recently, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte confirmed that former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte is “skin and bones” now as what his ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, also said. The Vice President claimed that he lost appetite.

Elizabeth Zimmerman also claimed that the former President just sleeps and watches television inside the ICC detention facility in The Hague. He does not exercise and he still reads books but not as much as before.

For Vice Pres. Duterte, she likes the current physique of her father. According to her, his previous physique with a huge belly seems very unhealthy for his heart. She believes that the public has yet to see the former President as thin as he is now.

The recent statements of the family of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte has sparked concerns among his supporters and allies. Recently, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano filed a resolution seeking for the approval of the ICC interim release bid of the former President and his house arrest.

Duterte’s camp sought for his ICC interim release to an undisclosed country. However, the Department of Justice and a group in the House of Representatives were quick to express opposition to it.

In his resolution, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano claimed that denying former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte of time with his family during his twilight years is allegedly an injustice. He cited the health, the old age, and the prolonged isolation of the former President in his bid to urge the Philippine government to call for the grant of his ICC interim release.

Cayetano wants the former President under a house arrest at the Philippine embassy in The Hague. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, a lawyer believes that the resolution is unlikely to be heard by the International Criminal Court.

Human rights lawyer Kristina Conti stressed that it is allegedly not for the Senate to look for a compromise. Speaking to DZMM, she stressed that the capacity and the authority of the resolution to be considered by the ICC.

“Actually sa kahit anong punto hindi kikilalanin ng ICC ang ganitong resolusyon na parang nangingialam sa kaniyang mga proseso,” Conti said.

Based on the report, the lawyer also stressed that the resolution filed by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano is allegedly based on “hearsay” as he has not personally visited former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. She also claimed that it appears to have no proof of the former President’s medical status.

“Mahirap naman po na isang third party pa nga. Walang kinalaman si Senator Alan Peter Cayetano sa sitwason ni Duterte ngayon, walang pruweba na nakabisita siya at puro hearsay kumbaga ang kaniyang basehan,” she said.

In their camp’s bid for his ICC interim release, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte previously claimed that not all the needs of the 80-year-old former Pres. Duterte can be met inside the ICC.
