Police Officer Accidentally Shoots Himself While Removing Pistol Belt
A police officer tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself at his home in Sitio Ukban, Buhisan, Cebu City.
Accidentally shooting oneself means a person unintentionally fires a gun and ends up hitting their own body. It’s not done on purpose and usually happens by mistake, often when someone is handling a gun carelessly or without checking if it’s loaded.
It can happen while cleaning the gun, taking it out of a bag or holster, or even while adjusting a belt where the gun is placed.
Recently, the 33-year-old officer, who was assigned to the Provincial Investigation and Detective Management Unit (PIDMU) of the Cebu Police Provincial Office, was reportedly alone when the incident happened.
Based on the initial investigation, the officer had just arrived home on Tuesday morning. Security footage from inside the house showed him removing his pistol belt. While doing so, he reportedly picked up his 9mm service firearm, which accidentally went off.
The bullet hit him in the stomach. He was quickly rushed to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he sadly passed away a few hours later.
Authorities believe it was a case of accidental discharge and confirmed there was no foul play involved, as the officer was alone in the house when it happened. The firearm used in the incident was his issued service weapon.
The unfortunate event has caused sadness within the police force and the community. The officer was known to his colleagues as responsible and dedicated to his job, which made the news even more painful for those who knew him.
The Cebu Police Provincial Office extended their condolences to the officer’s family and said they are offering support as they deal with the sudden loss.
The incident reminds the public of the dangers that come with handling firearms even at home and the importance of always practicing safety measures, even for those well-trained to use them.
