Taxi Drivers at NAIA Caught Overcharging Passengers

Taxi Drivers Arrested for Overcharging Passengers at NAIA

Several taxi drivers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals were arrested for overcharging passengers.

Recently, the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP) arrest some taxi drivers at NAIA for allegedly overcharging passengers and not using their meters.

Authorities released video footage showing one of the 11 taxi drivers caught offering a fixed fare instead of using the taxi meter. This practice, known as “contracting,” is illegal and unfair to travelers, especially those unfamiliar with the usual rates.

True enough, napatunayan naming meron talagang contracting beyond dun sa standard dun sa supposed meter,” AVSEGROUP director Police Brigadier General Jason Capoy said.

The taxi driver’s license was confiscated, and an investigation is ongoing. Based on the findings, the driver indeed asked for a fare much higher than what the meter would normally charge.

According to AVSEGROUP, taxi drivers caught doing this may lose their temporary permit to operate. If they repeat the offense, their license and franchise could be completely revoked.

One reported case involved a passenger being charged P1,200 for a trip from NAIA Terminal 3 to Terminal 1, an amount far beyond the usual fare. It raised concern and led to stricter monitoring around the terminals.

The AVSEGROUP also mentioned that they are looking into the possibility that some airport staff may be working with these drivers or benefiting from the scheme. If proven, those involved could face administrative or criminal charges.

Authorities remind taxi drivers to follow the proper rules and treat passengers fairly. At the same time, travelers are encouraged to report any suspicious or overpriced offers to help maintain order and safety at the airport.
