DepEd Bacolod Changes Class Schedule of Senior High Students After Parent Complains
The Department of Education (DepEd) Bacolod City has officially adjusted the class schedule for all Senior High School students under its division.
The decision came after a parent posted on social media, questioning why her child was dismissed from school as late as 5:30 PM. She expressed concern that students were staying in school for around 10 hours, longer than a regular 8-hour workday.
DepEd Bacolod deputy spokesperson RJ Paglumutan explained that DepEd Superintendent Dr. Dennis Develos and Bacolod City National High School Principal Richard Gelangre responded to the issue by reviewing and changing the existing schedule.

Paglumutan mentioned that the 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM class time had been the usual schedule for several years already. He also clarified that, unlike Junior High School, Senior High School classes follow a college-style schedule.
It means students don’t always have full-day classes. Some days have long breaks, and others may end earlier, depending on the student’s class load.
Still, DepEd Bacolod acknowledged the concern of parents whose children travel far to attend school from places like Don Salvador Benedicto and Murcia. Because of this, the schedule was adjusted, and all Senior High Schools under DepEd Bacolod are now required to dismiss students by 4:30 PM.

While this change aims to make school days more manageable, some working students who benefited from the older schedule expressed disappointment. They had free time between classes that allowed them to work part-time. But Paglumutan said they have to follow the new policy.
He also reminded school heads to always consider both students’ and teachers’ well-being when setting schedules.
