Freddie Aguilar Death: Celebrities Honor Late OPM Legend

The death of Freddie Aguilar drew an outpouring of tributes from other artists.

FREDDIE AGUILAR DEATH – Celebrities bid farewell to the late OPM legend who died at the age of 72 on May 27.

Filipino folk songwriter and OPM icon Freddie Aguilar died on Tuesday, May 27, at the age of 72. According to reports, he died due to cardiac arrest arising from kidney complications and pneumonia.

Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) general counsel George Briones confirmed the news, and according to him, the legend died at 1:30 AM on May 27 at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City. He was reportedly transferred to the Philippine Heart Center from another hospital due to an alleged blocked artery.

He was known as Ka Freddie and was well-loved for his song “Anak,” which has 33 million copies sold worldwide and is said to be the biggest-selling record in OPM history. To recall, he was appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts. 

“Bulag, Pipi at Bingi,” “Pulubi,” “Problema” “Magbago Ka,” “Magdalena,” and “Estudyante Blues,” are some of his biggest hits.

With his death came the outpouring of tributes for him from his fellow artists.

Theater veteran Audie Gemora said in a post, “Sadly another OPM icon has passed Freddie Aguilar,” while singer-songwriter and APO Hiking Society member Jim Paredes wrote, “Farewell, Freddie. Salamat sa mga awiting iniwan mo.”

“Paalam Freddie Aguilar. Your music will live on #anak #ipaglalabanko #magdalena,” Senator Sonny Angara posted. Actress Vivian Velez also shared, “Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His music will forever live on in our hearts.”

Senator Tito Sotto, who filed a Senate resolution in 2018 recognizing Aguilar’s lifetime outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and culture, wrote, “One of best if not the best singer/composer i have produced. We love you Pareng Freddie! He will now be performing for a far greater audience.”

Manny Pacquiao also expressed his sadness at the loss. He shared the impact of his song “Anak” on him and underscored Aguilar’s contributions to the music industry and how his pieces went beyond generations.
