Chiz Escudero on Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial: “Mas mataas ang lebel ng kahandaan ng Senado”

CHIZ ESCUDERO – The Senate President claimed that the Senate preparation for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte is on a higher level.

Amid Vice Pres. Sara Duterte having no expectations from her impeachment trial, the Vice President previously said she has accepted whatever the outcome of the trial will be. According to her, her trust is on the lawyers who are handling the case.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte previously claimed that her lawyers are “more than confident” to win the impeachment trial. She was impeached by the House of Representatives last February 5 after more than 2/3 of the lawmakers in the lower chamber approved the impeachment rap against her.

Presidential son and Ilocos Norte Representative Sandro Marcos was one of the lawmakers in the House who signed the impeachment rap of Duterte. His approval of the Vice President’s impeachment came amid a different pronouncement from his father.

Previously, amid the feud between him and the Vice President, Pres. Bongbong Marcos claimed that he is against the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. He stressed that it will not benefit any Filipino. However, the Duterte camp believes that the Marcos administration allegedly wants to remove her from her position.

Amid several calls to start the impeachment trial right away, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero turned them down while the Senate session is on break. Following the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the Senate Chief assured that the impeachment trial will push through despite the former President’s detention in The Hague.

Recently, during the Kapihan sa Senado, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero revealed that there is a higher preparation for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Based on a report on GMA News, the Senate Chief stressed that they have already prepared the identification documents (IDs), the security, and as well as the holding areas.

“Mas mataas ang lebel ng kahandaan ng Senado, pati ‘yong invitations, ‘yung ID, ‘yung security preparations, ‘yung holding areas ng prosecution, ng defense panel nakahanda na rin hanggang sa detalye ng parking-an nila, hinanda na rin namin at handa na rin kami,” Escudero said.

Based on the report, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero also revealed that there will be a dry run for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. It is set after the Senate adjourns on June 13. The Senate chief also reiterated his call to his fellow senators to refrain from giving categorical stance on the impeachment trial.

“Ayon sa rules sana iwasan nila na magbigay ng categorical na posisyon o sagot kaugnay nito hanggat hindi pa nagsisimula ang trial at wala pa silang nakikitang mga ebidensya pabor o kontra sa nasasakdal na si VP Sara,” he expressed.
