Former VP Leni Robredo makes history in Naga!
Naga City’s first female mayor is former vice president Leni Robredo, batting for transparency and good governance.
On Tuesday, former vice president Leni Robredo was proclaimed as mayor of Naga City. This post was once held by her late husband, the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo. She was able to secure the post by a landslide win against her rivals Toots De Quiros, Louie Ortega, and Ganda Abrazado.
Robredo made history as the first female mayor of Naga. She secured 84,377 votes in Halalan 2025. To recall, her mayoral bid surprised many, even the people of Naga, as they had expected her to run for a national position.
“Pinaka-dream ko hindi lang pagbutihin pa lalo ‘yong buhay ng mga Nagueño, pero maipakita sa buong bansa na ‘pag may mabuting pamamahala taumbayan din ‘yong makikinabang,” she said.
She would accordingly focus on addressing the grievances raised, such as the proper spending of city funds. She is aware that much is to be done, but with her husband’s initiatives, she has a guide.
To recall, under her late husband’s leadership, jueteng” and other illegal activities were among the issues he tried to eliminate. Jesse served as the city’s mayor for 19 years and was the youngest Philippine city mayor at 29 when he won in 1988.
The former VP, as the mayor now, plans to apply this kind of governance and prioritize basic services, such as water, electricity, traffic, and flood control. She also aims to give Nagueños genuine and transparent governance.
The city’s incumbent mayor, Nelson Legacion, did not seek reelection to give way to Robredo. He, instead, ran for Congress to represent the province’s 3rd District.
In 2022, Robredo lost to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for presidency. Before she became vice president, she served as the representative of Camarines Sur 3rd District.
