COMELEC Second Division Orders Pasig Candidate Ian Sia’s Disqualification

Pasig candidate for governor Christian “Ian” Sia is ordered disqualified by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Second Division over his “single mom joke”.

For a few weeks now, campaign sorties are happening left and right amid the May 2025 Elections drawing near. However, there are events in some campaign rallies that took national attention. One of which was in Pasig City.

Atty. Christian “Ian” Sia who is a Pasig candidate for the congressional race hooked the attention of countless Filipinos with his “joke” on single mothers. The said solo parent joke of the Pasig congressional bet earned him bashing.

Speaking at a campaign rally, Sia “joked” that single moms who still have their monthly period and are lonely may sleep with him once a year. He also said that they just have to have their name listed.

The “joke” of Sia reportedly sparked laughter from the crowd. Later on, he clarified that he is a married man and it is only a joke. However, his remarks did not sit well with countless netizens.

Amid the calls from the netizens to investigate the incident, COMELEC vowed to take action on the Pasig candidate. The lawyer-candidate apologized over his remarks and claimed that he just allegedly wants to catch the attention of the audience.

In his apology over his “single mom joke”, the Pasig candidate claimed that many people have already spoken ahead of him and the audience are seemingly losing their interest to listen. Thus, he did it to get their attention.

Sia also claimed that his statement allegedly falls within the bounds of his “freedom of speech”. The remarks of the congressional candidate earned him criticisms from countless netizens as well as comments from some popular individuals.

Sia is part of the team Kaya This which Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up Shamcey Supsup was also a member. However, after careful consideration, Shamcey Supsup left the team Kaya This following the Pasig bet’s joke.

Recently, based on a report on Manila Bulletin, the COMELEC Second Division has ordered the disqualification of Pasig candidate Ian Sia over his controversial “single mom joke”. In a resolution dated May 7, the poll body stressed the values that candidates are expected to carry.

“Candidacy for public office is more than a political endeavor; it is a measure of one’s moral fitness to lead. Candidates are expected to carry themselves with honesty, decency, and a deep respect for others.”

“Public office demands a temperament that unites rather than divides, and a character that respects rather than demeans,” the resolution further read.

Based on the report, the COMELEC Second Division stressed that Pasig candidate Ian Sia’s remarks were unlawful and offensive on the principles for a respectful and fair elections.

“Public office demands better, and the people deserve no less,” the poll body stated.

Reportedly, in case Atty. Ian Sia obtains the highest votes in the upcoming May 2025 Elections, his proclamation will be on hold until the case against him has come to a full resolution.

Previously, aside from Miss Universe 3rd Runner-up Shamcey Supsup, another popular individual who reacted to Pasig candidate Ian Sia’s “joke” was actress Angelu de Leon.
