Conclave 2025: Still No New Pope In Round 2 Of Voting

The second round of voting for Conclave 2025 still declared no new pope.

CONCLAVE 2025 – The result of the second round of voting revealed black smoke, which means there is still no new pope.

One hundred thirty-three cardinals are to gather again, as the second round of voting still has not decided on who will be the next pope. To recall, Pope Francis died at the age of 88 due to a stroke that led to a coma and caused his heart to fail.

Conclave 2025

For the new pope to be considered and declared, a cardinal must have a two-thirds majority of the voting cardinals. On Wednesday, May 7, a plume of black smoke — fumata nera in Italian — from the chapel’s chimney was released while the world watched.

As much as we all know, once there’s a new pope, white smoke, or fumata bianca, will be the significant indication, as will the ringing of the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica.

There are 133 cardinals participating as eligible electors, and here’s the composition of cardinals based on geographical location:

  • Europe: 52
  • Africa: 17
  • North America: 16
  • Central America: 4
  • South America: 17
  • Asia: 23
  • Oceania: 4

This means a new pope must have at least 89 votes.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and other cardinals, such as Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Peter Erdo, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Peter Turkson, Cardinal Sergio da Rocha, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonca, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, and Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, composed the list of potential successors to the pope.

Here’s the schedule of activities for May 8:

  • 7:45 a.m. (1:45 p.m., PH time): The cardinals will go to the Apostolic Palace to begin the day’s proceedings.
  • 8:15 a.m. (2:15 p.m., PH time): There will be a Mass and Lauds in the Pauline Chapel, which is situated within the Vatican City’s Apostolic Palace.
  • 9:15 a.m. (3:15 p.m., PH time): There will be a mid-morning prayer in the Sistine Chapel, which will be followed by the first round of voting.
  • Roughly after 10:30 a.m. (4:30 p.m., PH time): White smoke may appear from the Sistine Chapel chimney if a pope is elected during this vote. If no pope is elected, black smoke is expected.
