4 BJMP Officers Honored for Preventing Chinese Inmate From Escaping
Four BJMP officers were honored for apprehending a Chinese inmate from escaping in Parañaque.
On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, several officers from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) were honored or their brave and quick response during an attempted ambush and escape in Parañaque last April 7, 2025.
“Ang kanilang mabilis at mahusay na tugon ay sumasalamin ng kanilang katapangan, propesyonalismo at tunay na serbisyo publiko,” Rivera said.

The officers were transporting 37-year-old Chinese inmate Hu Yang back to their facility in Barangay La Huerta, Parañaque after attending a court hearing in Makati City. While on their way, their vehicle was suddenly blocked by two cars.
Armed men then opened fire in an attempt to help the inmate escape. Despite the danger, the BJMP officers fought back and protected the inmate. One officer was injured in the shootout but was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
Thanks to their courage and quick action, the escape attempt failed. With help from the Parañaque Police, a quick hot pursuit operation was launched. Authorities were able to arrest six suspects involved in the ambush.

The Chinese inmate was safely returned to jail without further incident. To recognize the officers’ bravery and dedication, BJMP Chief Ruel Rivera awarded them the Medal of Wounded Hero and the Medal of Merit.
These awards are given to personnel who show courage, skill, and commitment even in life-threatening situations.

The actions of these four jail officers show how important it is to stay alert and act quickly, especially when safety is at risk. Their response prevented a dangerous escape and kept the public safe. The BJMP and the community are grateful for their service and heroism.
