Myanmar Earthquake: 144 Dead, 732 Injured; Figures Expected To Rise

A powerful Myanmar earthquake that also shook Thailand recorded 144 deaths and 732 injuries as of the latest.

MYANMAR EARTHQUAKE – The 7.7-magnitude tremor has claimed a lot of lives and left many people injured, and the numbers are expected to rise.

On March 28, 2025, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.7 magnitude quake that hit Myanmar and Thailand. The epicenter was located around 17.2 kilometers from the city of Mandalay, the second largest city in the country, which also houses around 1.5 million people.

It has a depth of 10 kilometers or 6.2 miles. The powerful tremor has left buildings collapsing, and many lives have been claimed. The shaking also caused injuries to numerous people. The strong shaking turned a major hospital in the Myanmar capital into a “mass casualty area.”

An under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok also collapsed, leaving several trapped. The quake brought widespread devastation, especially in Myanmar, and even the famous Ava bridge collapsed near the epicenter. A strong aftershock of 6.4 magnitude also hit Myanmar, and this was felt across Thailand and in China.

As of this writing, 144 dead and 732 injured were recorded.

“I have personally visited some affected sites to assess the situation. I would like to call upon everyone to join hands and support the ongoing rescue missions,” Min Aung Hlaing said in a televised speech on Friday. He added that he has declared a state of emergency and requested international assistance. He also opened doors to nations and organizations willing to help the people in need in their country.

“I would like to extend an open invitation to any organizations and nations willing to come and help the people in need within our country,” he expressed, adding that India promised to send assistance to them.
