Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial Delay Beneficial For Her

According to lawmakers, the delay in the impeachment trial of Sara Duterte benefits her.

SARA DUTERTE IMPEACHMENT – The VP’s impeachment trial is proposed to begin on July 30, and according to lawmakers, this delay benefits the VP.

VP Sara’s impeachment trial is not starting anytime soon, according to Senate President Chiz Escudero. The majority of the lawmakers from the House of Representatives signed the impeachment complaint, and this is associated with several allegations, which included the confidential funds.

There are six major allegations involved, and those are the following:

  • Misusing public funds while being the vice president and education department head
  • unexplained wealth
  • death threats to the president
  • Bribery and corruption
  • involvement in extrajudicial killings
  • destabilization, insurrection, and public disorder

It was proposed by the Senate President that the trial will begin on July 30, which is five months since the articles of impeachment were brought to the upper chamber of Congress. Several lawmakers reacted to the delay.

House Assistant Majority Leader and TINGOG Party List Representative Jude Acidre believed that this delay works for the benefit of the vice president. Acidre urged the Senate to move to not drown the proceedings with technicalities.

The delay gives the person in question more time to have a sense of immunity. He cited the old adage “justice delayed is justice denied” as something that can describe the current situation.

“And I think, to be honest, the one who benefits from this is the person in question, of course, the Vice President, because while we continue to delay hearing the impeachment trial, there would be an increasing sense of impunity, that it seems the crimes and shortcomings that we saw with the Department of Education and the Office of the Vice President are not being taken seriously,” he added.

Other lawmakers also believed that July was too late for the trial to start. They feel like a broken record already as they could no longer stress enough how important it is for the trial to start “forthwith” as the Constitution states.

Taguig City 2nd District Rep. Amparo Maria Zamora expressed her confusion as to why senators insist on delaying the proceedings.
