COMMISSION ON ELECTIONS – Following the viral COMELEC interview in It’s Showtime, the poll body invited the clueless contestant.
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is mandated with election-related functions. The poll body is mandated to “give life and meaning to the basic principle that sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them”. This was created by a 1940 amendment to the 1935 Constitution.
Recently, the poll body has been a trending topic online after a contestant on Showtime confessed to having limited knowledge about the COMELEC. The interview about COMELEC eventually went viral online, and host Vice Ganda expressed that this is bothersome.
The confession from a 20-year-old contestant sparked discussion online. Based on a previous article, Vice Ganda pointed out the systemic and educational problems in the country.
For the COMELEC, Vice added, “Baka kailangang meron din silang gawin na pagde-disseminate o pagpapakalat ng impormasyon para sa inyo. The government in general.”
Following the viral incident, the COMELEC invited the 20-year-old noontime show contestant, and she is expected to visit their Intramuros, Manila office on Tuesday. Comelec chairperson George Garcia confirmed this, and she will come from Pampanga.
They saw an opportunity from this happening to educate the public. The invitation is not to reprimand the contestant but to give her a better understanding in terms of the functions of the poll body.
“It is for our full understanding as to why she is unaware of Comelec’s mandate. If there is a lack of awareness, then that is our failure, and we must rectify it immediately,” the poll chief said.
It is their duty to explain what the independent constitutional body is and its functions. They would also be willing to educate others like her.
