The post, shared by a teacher, also shows the cost of other menudo ingredients bought from a supermarket in Bacoor, Cavite. She pointed out that three pieces of tomatoes were priced at P48.88, a small net bag of potatoes with 2-3 pieces cost P119.00, and two carrots were P45.44.

Green bell peppers were priced at P32.13 for one piece. Comparing these to pork prices, she lamented that the total cost of her vegetables now matched that of meat.

Other internet users joined in, sharing similar experiences. In Marikina Public Market, tomatoes reached P400 per kilo, while two pieces cost P60. Green chili peppers were priced at P10 per piece, or P600 per kilo, and two pieces of bell peppers could cost as much as P90.

According to the Department of Agriculture’s price monitoring, tomato prices in the National Capital Region range from P200 to P350 per kilo. The DA explained that these prices are expected to stabilize by late January or early February with the arrival of the dry season.

The increasing prices have left many buyers shocked, with some jokingly calling tomatoes a “luxury item.”

As the prices of vegetables remain high, consumers hope that the promised decrease comes soon, easing the financial burden for many Filipino families.
