West PH Sea: Chinese Submarine Drone Recovered Off Philippine Coast

WEST PH SEA – In the West Philippine Sea, a suspected Chinese submarine drone was recently recovered off the coast of Masbate.

A submarine drone suspected to be of Chinese origin was recovered in waters near the central Philippines, sparking concerns about potential national security risks, police confirmed on Thursday.

Based on a report from Inquirer, the discovery was made on Monday by three local fishermen approximately nine kilometers (six miles) off the coast of San Pascual in Masbate province. The drone, described as torpedo-shaped, yellow, and marked with “HY-119,” was floating in the sea before being handed over to authorities.

Regional police director Andre Dizon stated that initial research suggests the drone is a Chinese underwater navigation and communication system. “It has an antenna and an eye that can be used for viewing. Based on our research, this can be used for monitoring and reconnaissance,” Dizon explained.

Although the drone was unarmed, Dizon emphasized its recovery’s significance, noting “potential national security implications.” The device was about two meters (six feet) in length and equipped with fins, possibly aiding its navigational capabilities.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the Philippines and China over maritime disputes in the South China Sea. China claims almost the entire sea, disregarding rival claims from other nations, including the Philippines, and an international tribunal ruling that invalidates its sweeping assertions.

Fisherman Rodnie Valenzuela, 30, played a crucial role in bringing the drone to local authorities. Accompanied by barangay officials, Valenzuela turned over the device to the San Pascual Municipal Police Station. It was later transferred to the Philippine Navy on Tuesday.

Authorities are now awaiting comments from the Philippine Navy and the Chinese embassy in Manila, but neither has responded to inquiries from AFP at the time of reporting.

This recovery adds another layer to the strained relationship between the two nations and raises questions about the increasing presence of foreign equipment in Philippine waters. It also underscores the importance of vigilance in securing the country’s maritime territories amidst regional tensions.
