Young Boy Dies While Watching Blast of Firecracker Known as Goodbye Philippines

TALISAY CITY, CEBU – A young boy lost his life and his friends were injured in a firecracker blast on New Year’s Day. 

“Goodbye Philippines” is the name of a super loud and powerful firecracker that’s actually banned in the Philippines. It’s famous because it can be really dangerous, sometimes even causing serious injuries or accidents. 

Even though it’s illegal, some people still use it, especially during New Year’s celebrations. Authorities are always reminding everyone not to use it and do their best to confiscate these dangerous firecrackers to keep people safe.

Recently, a 10-year-old boy lost his life, and his friends were injured after a firecracker known as “Goodbye Philippines” exploded early on New Year’s Day (January 1, 2025). The incident happened around 2 a.m. inside a subdivision. 

According to authorities, the firecracker exploded, causing debris to fly in all directions. A sharp piece of rock struck the boy in the chest, piercing through his body and causing fatal injuries. 

Natamaan ng bato na tumilapon galing sa ‘Goodbye Philippines’ ang bata,” Candulawan barangay chair Josefina Concial said. 

Three minors and an 18-year-old, who were also present, sustained injuries from the explosion. They were rushed to the hospital, where they are scheduled to undergo surgery. 

The investigation revealed that the firecracker had initially failed to ignite. It was lit a second time near broken tiles, which intensified the impact of the explosion. The debris from the tiles was responsible for causing the injuries.

Authorities are now working to identify those responsible for lighting the prohibited firecracker, as its use continues to pose risks during holiday celebrations. 

The incident points out the dangers of illegal firecrackers and the importance of strict enforcement of laws prohibiting their use. It also reminds the public to prioritize safety during festive events, particularly for children.
