PROSPERITY BOWL 2025 – Another year is about to end which means the start of a new one and here’s a tradition often done by many.
As the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve, this indicates the end of one year and the beginning of another. What comes with it apart from parties and celebrations are traditions and rituals that are believed to invite prosperity and good luck for the new year.
There are a lot of New Year traditions in the Philippines and one of them is making a prosperity bowl. This tradition is to to celebrate the arrival of the new year believed to bring good fortune, health, and wealth.
It is composed of objects that have respective meanings with them.
This bowl is composed of:
- Bowl – This should be durable and made of authentic materials such as ceramic or glass. What it is made of serves as the strong foundation of your intentions.
- Grains – In the Philippines, white rice is basically used as the base which represents abundance and wealth. Grains symbolize growth and nourishment.
- Fruits – Oftentimes, orange is used for good luck and wealth due to its round shape and bright color. There are also others such as pomegranates for prosperity and fertility, apples for peace and harmony, and in many cultures, eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight is a tradition for luck.
- Money – Both coins and papers are used. Coins are for financial abundance while the papers serve as the direct representation of your wealth.
- Eggs – Traditionally, the bowl contains 12 eggs for completeness and fullness. It also stands for the 12 months of the year.
- Herbs and spices – In the Philippines, what is usually added are Bay leaves to attract success and prosperity.
- Ang Pao – Placed behind the bay leaves are these three envelopes that contains Php 168.00 each.
This tradition and others hold beliefs and there’s no harm in doing them. However, our luck and abundance for the upcoming year must not be dependent on them. In the end, it is us with our choices and decisions that make up for our luck and fate.
