DECEMBER 21 – The Philippines will mark its longest night tonight, Saturday, for this year 2024 and it will begin at 05:21 p.m.

Every year, there is that day which brings the longest night and the shortest day. It is the winter solstice or also called the hibernal solstice. It happens when either of the poles of the Earth reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun.

The winter solstice happens twice a year. It happens once in each hemisphere, the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It brings the shortest period of daylight.

For this year 2024, the winter solstice is set today, December 21. The Filipinos will experience the longest night in the Philippines starting at 5:21 p.m.

Based on a report on GMA News, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said that “this day marks the shortest day and the longest night in the northern hemisphere, when the sun reaches its southernmost position in the sky”.

PAGASA further noted that the astronomers consider this day as the beginning of the winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.
