BSP to Release New Polymer Banknotes Featuring Filipino Wildlife Starting December 23
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will release new polymer banknotes starting Monday (December 23, 2024).
BSP announced that the new polymer banknotes will be released only in Metro Manila at first. The new notes will feature various animals that symbolize qualities important to Filipinos, replacing the portraits of famous historical figures used in previous designs.
The P1,000 polymer bill will feature an eagle, symbolizing strength, freedom, and keen vision, qualities that represent the Filipino spirit.
Meanwhile, the P500 bill will showcase the Visayan spotted deer, symbolizing clarity and sharpness. The P100 bill will feature the Palawan peacock, representing the beauty of the Filipino people even during tough times. The P50 bill will have the Visayan leopard cat, symbolizing agility and freedom.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that the introduction of these polymer bills represents the progress that the country is making toward becoming more practical, innovative, and meaningful.
He pointed out that the Philippines is now part of the 40 countries around the world that use polymer banknotes, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.
These new bills mark a departure from the past, as iconic figures such as former Presidents Corazon Aquino and Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, as well as other historical figures like Sergio Osmeña and Manuel Roxas, will no longer be featured.
The new polymer bills are expected to be available in limited quantities in Metro Manila by December 23, 2024. They will become more widely available across the country in January 2025.
